Here’s a basic exercise to enrich and expand your jazz piano comping

Let’s try practicing two things together: harmony and rhythm

A turnaround is a series of chords that "turn around" the tonic, or basic note of the key, on a I-VI-II-V progression in the first four bars, ad lib

In the 5th bar is an example of the turnaround invented by John Coltrane, on I-bIII-bVI-bII. It’s a really cool variation

Then there’s "Position – 1," another typical progression in the genre, on the four parallel notes I-II-#II-III

Here’s the transcription of what I played in the video, with a tune added to the 3-note chords in the turnaround. You should play the melody a little “outside,” that is, louder than the accompaniment, which should be piano. If you’re a beginner, just concentrate on making the chords sound good while you play in tempo

Voici un exercice de base pour nourrir et enrichir l ‘accompagnement jazz au piano

L’idée est de pratiquer deux exercices en un : harmonique et rythmique

Turnaround signifie tourner autour de la fondamentale, de la tonalité, en employant dans les quatre premières mesures les degrés I VI II V en boucle

Suit mesure 5 un exemple de turnaround inventé par John Coltrane qui utilise les degrés I bIII bVI bII. Une variation très intéressante

Ensuite « Position - 1 » montre une progression à quatre notes parallèles de type I II #II III, un classique du genre

Puis le relevé ou la transcription de ce que j’ai joué dans la video, avec une mélodie qui vient se placer au-dessus des accords à trois sons du turnaround. Cette mélodie doit bien sûr être jouée « en dehors », cad plus fort que l’accompagnement. Ce dernier étant joué piano
